California is making big strides on the Geospatial/GIS front. Just launched in January by California Natural Resources Secretary Chrisman and State Chief Information Officer Teri Takai the Cal-Atlas Geospatial Clearinghouse will allow the general public to access maps, data and information that has not previously been accessible on a single site or from a single source. The Cal-Atlas site, featured at the GIS Leadership Summit in May 2009, is a portal to help organizations work together on GIS data and share the costs of acquiring imagery and other kinds of geospastial data.

At our GIS Summit Steering Committee this last week, it was announced that Michael Byrne, GIS Architect with the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, will be named California's first Chief Geographic Information Officer in early March.

The leaders to attend the GIS Leadership Summit during the Conference on California's Future will explore how GIS allows users to navigate mapping resources layered with data, in an environment where they can visualize scenarios in unlimited new ways to solve a multitude of challenges. Michael Byrne will serve as the host for this historic summit that is being planned by members of the California GIS Task Force and industry leaders ESRI and Google.

"The Governor recognizes the value of GIS to better serve our people and give policy makers and the public enhanced decision-making tools." --Teri Takai, State CIO

The summit audience will be comprised of agency secretaries, undersecretaries, department directors, elected officials and senior IT leaders. We look forward to seeing you there!

Building a Smart & Sustainable California

"Building a Smart and Sustainable California" is the theme for the 2009 Conference on California's Future.

The
event will focus on how California can harness innovative thinking and
smart technologies to build long-term strategies that mean greater
success for the state.

       A broader look at sustainability:
Meeting today's needs while provisioning for the future.

Largely
associated with environmental issues, sustainability is a more
embracive idea that reaches across all of California's endeavors.
Sustainability means meeting today's needs while provisioning for the
future. It is a powerful framework for thinking and acting on a range
of challenges facing California.

Given this framework, the Conference on California's Future will showcase
long-term solutions around cornerstones critical to the state's
success:

                                  Government People
                                  Community Environment

For each cornerstone, the conference will highlight strategies that incorporate innovation for the following elements:

                                  Policies Technologies
                                  Leadership Economies

What
this means in practical terms is that the Conference on California's
Future is a forum unprecedented in scope that will bring together
Leadership Summits and a "State of the Future" showcase on topics
ranging from transportation to education, from government to the
environment.

California is where tomorrow is invented for the rest of the world. This is the event for the people who invent California

Stay tuned for more details on this event and if you'd like more info on how you can participate
contact the event Exec Director at Susan Shinneman 916/932-1300.

Members of the Conference on California's Future Advisory Board met last week to focus on planning for the educational program/workshops for the Information Technology segment of the May 2009 event.

Discussion focused on topics currently "top-of-mind" for public IT officials from the region. including:

This included:

• Collaborative tools for mobile workers. The goal advisory members agreed is to productively un-tether public employees from desks and includes a push towards more mobile "anywhere" computing enabled by such things as video conferencing, greater deployment of lap-top computers and mobile devices.

• Dealing with difficult budget times. Advisory Board members agreed that strategies such as shared services are vital for getting the most out of tightening financial resources, combined with learning how to prioritize to effectively reduce costs.

• The greening of California IT. The board discussed how consolidation and virtualization will help pool and share IT resources in a way that reduces costs and makes the IT infrastructure far more flexible.

• Project Governance. The board stressed the importance of developing standard methodologies and beefing up PMOs to ensure projects are completed on target.

• Records management. The identifying and managing of records was "top of mind" for almost every member of the advisory board. Crucial aspects of this topic include eDiscovery, case management and data governance that will be covered in the seminar program.

• Web 2.0 best practices. The group was very interested in seeing case studies of government entities using social networking applications to deliver services or reach out to their citizens.

If you would like to learn more about the IT educational elements of the event or have ideas to contribute please contact Susan Shinneman at sshinneman@govtech.com. We'd love to hear from both government and industry with your feedback and suggestions.
